All were excellent guesses. However, you are looking at perfected burned papad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papad). Thank you for playing!
Btw, when papad burns, it catches on fire. The flames shoot up 2 feet!
hahaha! So my other guess of mud made out of charcoal ash was not too far off either. Though I'd guess that even burned, papad is more edible than charcoal ash. ;)
