I had laser surgery on both eyes today and I definitely would not call it "easy" as many people had told me. Yes, it's only about 15 mins - but damn is that an intense 15 mins! So a few hours later and I'm able to see now, with some foggy vision as my eye heals. As my vision looks clearer and clearer, it's definitely all worth it. Follow-up is tomorrow morning, so I'll wait until then before I stop worrying about complications!

So after the surgery, my day has been a haze of eye drops every hour, and resting.

Can you please describe intense?

Sure! Well you're on your back and they tape each eyelid so your eye is wide open. Multiple eye drops are poured into the eye to manage pain and clean. Then a round hoop is placed over the eyeball and clamped on; a vacuum sucks the cornea up into it, as they read off the pressure. That is very uncomfortable. It feels like someone is holding your eyeball in their fist - you can still see though, through the disc. Then you are swiveled under the inter-lase machine - flashing lights just centimeters from your eye. They have you hold very still until the sensors latch onto the location of your eye. A blade then cuts across your field of vision, cutting as it goes. There is some pain here, but mostly discomfort as it cuts. Even though you are trying to stay calm, the body is reacting to this physical action, with shock. The cutting lasts about 20 seconds, with the doctors telling you to stay calm and DON'T MOVE the entire time. So when this is done, they swivel you back so you're not under the machine - you can still see through the hoop but everything is a bit foggy. Now the doctor uses small instruments to lift the flap the machine just made and inspect it. You are then rotated the other way to go under the LASIK machine. The flap is opened again, and you have to stare up through the opening in your cornea until the LASIK machine latches on to your position. When ready, the doctor commands the laser to do its thing - which only lasts 20 secs or so and is not really painful. There is a disconcerting odor however. So then its basically complete, but next is the second most painful/uncomfortable part (after the cutting), and that is the doctor using a small flat tool to flatten your cornea back in place and tap it down. My right eye flap was not closing properly, so he tapped and slid across my eye a good 30 secs. Once complete, the whole process repeated as I was having both eyes done. Total: 15 mins. I came out completely drained emotionally and physically from the intensity. But a day later - I can say TOTALLY worth it :D
