New Sleep Comfort Sleep Number bed all set up - after seven months I have a grown-up bed again :). You might call it a glorified air mattress but I would get angry and disagree, because I paid a lot for that air mattress! On top of these two air chambers, there's a layer of foam padding, and then the mattress top padding, and a mattress cover, sheets, and finally a Nick.

First beer, and now sadly I see myself becoming a coffee snob! Upgraded to a burr-style grinder, thanks to credit card reward points. My blade-style grinder did fine for the past few years, but I hear this grinder will make a better cup. True coffee snobs, of course, will be completely offended by the Mr. Coffee coffee maker in the background.

On my way to work, the road I was going down was blocked by construction, and it was going to take a long time to get through. So, I ditched onto a side street, that turned into a dirt road. Return of DPN! Trying to get the regular updates going again. You may notice the picture quality go down, as I'm going to be uploading direct from my smartphone.

Joined a new gym, and the HD TVs attached to the treadmills and stationary bikes, makes for a more bearable workout. I spent 60 mins on this bike going through intervals of standing and sitting. I tried a recipe I saw on the new HungryGirl TV show - it's a low-cal granola made with oats, and puffed cereals; mixed with sugar-free syrup, and baked for a half hour. It cooked up really well, and gave my yogurt just the right crunch. Here's the recipe if you want to try it.

For over 50 years, the Ford Wixom Assembly Plant churned out shiny new cars. I pass it everyday on my commute, and marvel at the 4.7 million square feet of manufacturing capability. Sadly a couple years ago, Ford closed the plant and now it sits, unoccupied and slowly losing battles with the environment. There are however, plans forming to have multiple companies move in and turn it into a green energy park.

You might remember from last November I got a new Chevy Equinox. One of the things I bought it for, was the gas mileage - best in it's class by far! A lot of times, the sticker fuel economy based on EPA test procedures, does not do a good job of measuring real-world fuel economy. But as you can see below, I can do pretty well with this 3800 lb. SUV. If I keep it below 75 on the freeway, I manage about this mpg for my 34 mile commute.

Greetings loyal DPN readers. We are back from our two month vacation with lots of new material to share! Over the next few days I'll share pics from a variety of trips I've been on, and then we'll get back to the 'one image a day into my life' kinda theme.

I went out to Cali in late May to cheer on my friend Melissa in her first half marathon, the Rock 'n Roll San Diego Marathon / Half Marathon. But, due to injury, I ended up taking her number and running most of it myself. What an amazing event with tons of crowd support, fantastic music, and even got started by John "The Penguin" Bingham! I took this from an overpass when I was cheering on Melissa, unaware that a short time later I'd be running under it.

New running shoes! I finally made it over to Road Runner Sports and had them run their Shoe Dog system on me. They use special tools and analysis to measure how your foot strikes the ground, including slo-mo video of you running on a treadmill. I found out that I pronate slightly with both feet (roll slightly from the heel to the toe) and that my right foot does not run as straight as my left. Based on this, they recommended a neutral shoe, with some insole inserts to give me more arch support. This is the first time I've not been put into a stability shoe, by a running store 'expert.'

This is my first time trying Saucony. The Progrid Ride 2 felt REALLY good through my whole running motion when I tried it in the store, and the 'Superfeet' inserts really seemed to be helping me; I could feel more push off my heal to the front of my foot. Looking forward to going on a long run!

With the help of a recipe from my BIL, I made a Tofurkey roast in my new Crock Pot. It also gave me a chance to try out my new video cam with optical zoom. I've never used a crock pot so I wasn't sure how it would come out. I threw in some veges, 'rubbed' the tofurkey and put it in, and then covered everything in gravy. I also 'injected' some of the rub into the center of the roast (into the stuffing). Three hours later - Delicious! I think my next Crock Pot attempt will be a spicy vegetarian chili.

Rub: red cayenne pepper, salt, soy sauce, garlic
Veges: two potatoes, red onion, portabella mushrooms

Two highly-anticipated items arrived at Trader Joe's today, and if you have one nearby I highly recommend them. I tried this Belgian Ale at a friends party over the summer, and it was fantastic! They only sell it around this time of year, and at $4.99 it's a great price for a bottle this size. The Wintry Blend coffee has chunks of peppercorns and cinnamon.

Well it's a new month and I'd love to finish this 2009 daily picture project strong!

The Santa Fe served me well for 165k miles but things were breaking down a little too regularly. Eight Detroit winters will do that. I've been looking for a Cardinal Red 2010 Equinox since I first saw the redesign and color at work this past Spring. Turns out lots of other people liked them too because I couldn't find one at a dealer in the trim I wanted (FWD, 4cyl)...until this weekend.

I'm breaking the general concept here at DPN, to post a screenshot from my ipod touch. I'm just so pleased with my run tonight! The 8 miles I had on my training plan was a HUGE stretch after I ran seven yesterday and three on Monday. I've never run that many miles in 48 hours, even back in 2005 when I was at my peak. Well it went great, I ran all the way, and even had a semi-respectable pace (for me). Right now, for the first time, I am actually looking forward to the Grand Rapids HM in 10 days.

I'm starting a new healthy eating kick today, along with more running. Part of my eating plan is a minimal dinner and a good protein rich lunch. So tonight's dinner is green beans with lots of pepper, and mango chunks.

I don't really know how to trim my rose bush over the winter, so it always seems like I kill whatever roses may have had potential to bloom the next year. I think that's what happened this year because no roses have come in all year - until now! Suddenly there's five roses either bloomed or about to bloom. Pretty amazing given I haven't been watering it or fertilizing it, and it hasn't rained in more than two weeks.

Ran the Crim 10 mile race today. This is my fourth time, and today the weather was the best ever. Cool and no rain. So I pretty met my pace goal, and hope to build on this for a half marathon coming up later this year. I threw together this video of today's race

And yup, that's a metal lawn dart I'm playing with, that would probably not be considered a very safe kid's toy these days!

I am embarking on a large project to scan hundreds of family pictures, before Christmas. I've already spent six hours going through all the pictures to narrow down to this huge pile of albums, loose pictures, and 35mm slides. With my basic scanner, I'm thinking this may take many, many hours! But, for protecting the images in digital form, as well as the memories they bring - definitely worth it.

The CARS program aka cash-for-clunkers is working a bit too well. I'm ready to buy a new car but after visiting 6 or 7 Chevy dealers multiple times for two weeks - I think I just need to wait for the madness to end as they just can't keep what I want in stock! Today I drove around back behind the dealer and saw rows and rows of cash-for-clunkers vehicles ready to be recycled.
